2013 Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Update

The 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition came to an end on October 13th. The DOE challenged collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. In celebration of our 80th Anniversary, HD Electric Company was proud to sponsor and underwrite the electrical power system for finalist Middlebury College’s InSite project.

After two years of hard work from 19 schools, a winner was chosen that best blended affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. We congratulate all the participants for their outstanding effort in every contest.

Middlebury College placed 8th in the Solar Decathlon Competition and 3rd overall in the Affordability, Communications and Home Entertainment categories. They achieved full points in Energy Balance and Hot Water. At the same time they placed in the TOP 10 for all other contests.

This week the teams are giving guided tours to the judges for the Architecture, Engineering, Communications, Market Appeal and Affordability contests.  The competition wraps up on Saturday and as of Friday afternoon Middlebury College is in Sixth Place overall.  Good luck to the InSite team!  Click here for the latest news.

Today is Day 5 of the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.  The interior and exterior walls have been raised and Team Insite is working on the deck panels and raising the Solar Path.  The team is posting updates on their blog,click here for the latest news

Today is Day 3 of the Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.  Construction began on Monday and the Insite team has been working hard.  So far the mech mod, floor panels and private side have been completed.  A video of Day 1 assembly has been posted on the Middlebury Team Insite page, click here to view it.

In celebration of our 80th Anniversary, HD Electric Company (“HDE”) is proud to sponsor a finalist in the 2013 Solar Decathlon Competition, hosted by the U. S. Department of Energy. HDE is underwriting the electrical system for Middlebury College’s InSite project design.

     

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

Middlebury College began their planning in January of 2012 and have now completed the construction of their home, InSite! The competition begins in late September and all teams are busy now trying to finish their homes so they can be tested then disassembled and shipped to Irvine, CA in time for assembly at the competition site starting on September 22, 2013.

Middlebury College competed in the 2011 Solar Decathlon and is returning this year with an innovative design approach to environmentally and economically sustainable local living. InSite, the project name, focuses on five main points: to live in a walkable community, prioritize social space, localize energy systems, engage the street, and to celebrate nature. Middlebury’s inventive way of thinking made them a finalist in the 2013 Solar Decathlon where they will compete alongside 19 other collegiate institutions worldwide.
