This advisory is to inform you of some changes we are making to the accessory probes used on our MARK and DVM voltmeters and phasers.

First, we would like to clarify the proper use and application of the EAP accessory probes used for measuring voltage in 15 and 25kV loadbreak bushings and for other general purpose underground measurements. Both of these probes are shown here:

The EAP-1 is for use, as specified in the literature, on 15kV systems. This probe is labeled for use at a voltage of 8.3kV.

The EAP-2 is a longer version of the EAP-1 and is designed for use on 25kV systems. This probe is labeled for use at a voltage of 14.4kV. You may notice that the literature states that this probe "operates in 15kV gear as well." This statement is incorrect. This probe is designed for use in 25kV bushings only. The use of this probe in 15kV systems may result in a zero voltage reading on a live bushing.

For clarification, a full scale outline of the EAP-2 probe is shown here. We urge you to determine if you have any of these probes, and if you do have any, apply the available replacement labels to these probes. The purpose of these labels is to clearly state that the EAP-2 probes are for use on 25kV systems only and that their use in 15kV bushings may result in the failure to properly measure voltage in a live bushing.

If you have EAP-2 probes without the new labels, please contact us by telephone at 847-473-4980 or use the form below.

Here is a copy of the new label:

The new label should be affixed to the probe as shown here:

Both of the EAP probes have been discontinued and have been replaced by the ASP-15/25 for use in both 15 and 25kV loadbreak bushings and by the GCP-1, a general purpose insulated probe for use in underground systems of any voltage up to the maximum voltage of the HD Electric meter on which it is installed.

We at HD Electric Company are very concerned about the safety of the users of all of our products. We want to do everything we can to make sure our products are used in a safe manner and by users who are aware of the inherent risks of live high voltage testing. It is important that this information as well as all other safety warnings be understood and followed. Failure to follow any warnings or directions or the improper use of any product may expose the user to high voltage, severe injury or death.

Please ensure that the information contained in this notice is passed on to the appropriate departments and personnel.

Please print and fax this form to request labels.
